What is the next step in my Home Storage Plan?

The goal of our 4th Sunday lesson as a Stake was to "Encourage members to actually develop and carry out a personal or family plan to improve their home storage and to accept the first presidency's challenge to take their next step toward full compliance with this prophetic counsel."

What step have you decided to take?

We're taking an inventory and figuring out how long we could actually last on the food we have stored, so we have a better idea of what to purchase next!

That's a great idea Michelle! We are working on our three month supply, and trying to find the best way to store water, and find the cheapest place to purchase wheat.

I know- water is tricky. The Church site recommends old soda bottles (but we don't drink enough soda!)

I put up some websites that the Stake gave us about bulk orders in the "What's your biggest food storage challenge?" section. Several people at our training recommended the Honeyville Grains as they ship very inexpensively, and in the past our Stake has ordered from Walton Feed. Hope that helps. Perhaps others will have better ones that are local!

I planned 30 main dishes and then added a fruit and vegetable for each meal. I then figured out what food I would need for each main dish and multiplied it all by 3. The good Bishop put it all on a spread sheet for me so we could do an inventory to see what we needed. Breakfast was cereal, pancakes, or toast. Lunch was sandwiches or leftovers. It has taken several FHE's to finish this project. It is amazing to see how much food it really takes. I have about half of my menu's planned assuming that I have my freezer with food in it. That is the bigget challenge for me because I have a lot of vegetables and meat in the freezer.

Hilary, you can purchase wheat at Tri-County Produce Co. on Milpas. They sell lots of different grains and products there that you can buy by the pound. We have found excellent prices there. But then you need to get your own storage containers.

I loved the suggestion of having chocolate in your food storage. That is going to be my next purchase!
