The Fresh Dilemma....

All of you fresh food fans, let's brainstorm ways to make three month home storage work. (Katheryn, we're counting on you here!)

Here's a fancy dehydrator (yum) but there are also cheaper ways to try one out...

We had a dehydrator years ago that was difficult to clean, didn't heat evenly and I think I used it once to make fruit leather that took two days to make and my kids ate it in two hours! My neighbor used to borrow it every summer so I finally just gave it to her. How long does dehydrated food keep?

I love fresh fruits and veggies too but let's face it, it isn't going to work unless we are stranded on such an island with glorious fruits. But I have found, that not perfect, it has helped to even have canned fruits and vegetables and raisins, and other dried fruits (then lots of water). Remember, this won't be a perfect time, but we can at least get a feel for our beloved fruits.

I did the same thing with my dehydrator Lynette, it just wasn't worth it to me. I did make some fruit leather this summer with plums from my tree. It was yummy. I made it in the oven at the lowest temp possible. Without preservatives, it only lasts about 2 to 3 weeks in the frig.
