This is a place to help all of us start, improve, and perfect our ability to follow the counsel of our inspired leaders and our prophet. Feel free to use this space to post great deals and cheap prices, fabulous successes you've had, problems you're encountering, or just good ideas on where to put all the stuff!
We all know that the Church provides us with some additional suggestions and that recently there has been an emphasis on a 3 month supply of foods we eat regularly, and then a 1 year supply to sustain life. Don't forget to be wise about water and your financial reserves!

Quick question: Is it a three month supply of our regular food and then a whole year supply of survial food? or Is it a three month supply of our regular food and then a nine month supply of survial food? When I say survial food I mean the basic's. I ask because I have heard it stated both ways.
It is actually a 3 month supply of food you eat regularly, and then the subsequent 9 months of "survival" food, which all adds up to a year! You're not the only one to wonder this- the Stake Presidency had to give the teachers a Frequently Asked Questions sheet about this! :)
We are also VERY appreciative of the new focus the Brethren are taking on starting with foods you regularly eat anyway, and putting away an extra can a week. Then, when you've got a couple of month's back-up on things you know you will use, add the long-term, emergency stuff like wheat that will help hold you through a prolonged disaster. This wonderful, new perspective is so tremendously sensible and reasonable it makes us feel like the tiger has turned into a pussy cat we can not only live with, but learn to love.
I agree with Julene! Somehow, with the new guidelines, the whole thing feels much more manageable.
We loved the Stake Conference and Kirkman and I came home determined to finally(!) finish whipping our food-storage issues into shape. We began to make plans, then realized that it could be meaningful and fun to include our kids in the planning and implementation. We had a great family meeting where everyone brainstormed and made lists of the foods that we needed in our 3-month supply. The kids really got into it and the whole thing became enjoyable, and created a good "team" feeling for us. We decided to use some of our savings to finish buying what we needed, and everyone was involved in shopping and creating more space in the garage to store things. We were finally able to get the 3-month supply organized and pretty much completed, and are now ready to work on the longer-term supplies. (That's where all my questions are NOW!)
I have to say, though, that during Delwyn Ray's talk last week about provident living, it was very special to talk with my son and see him recognize that he felt "good inside" to know that we completed one of our goals in this area. (Now, on to the next big hurdle. . . long-term storage!)
Michelle, thanks for a superb lesson! It was inspiring and motivating. And, thanks for setting up a website just for us! How FUN is that?!!
Nanci Gardiner
We did much the same thing as the
Gardiner family. We had a FHE where we took inventory of everything we already had in our food storage area (the garage!) We were surprised to find that we had a much better long-term food storage situation than the rotating three month supply, so we made lists of the things we needed to replenish the three month supply, using a suggestion we got from Verlene--to build our rotating supply around foods from favorite family recipes that we use over and over again over the course of three months (in addition to food staples, of course.) We have been working on it ever since, and we just about have it! We have had a few surprises, though--tonight we realized that we had totally neglected to purchase a good supply of powdered and brown sugar, both of which we use a lot! We are certainly still learning, but we are finding that we're having fun along the way, and we do have a good feeling inside because we know we are following the prophet!
Our family too decided to get going...We had a FHE on it and decided to organize our kitchen more. We found extra space for our 3 month and then looked at what we had. We have interesting things but the taste value would kill us in no time. I think spices are the key for long term. Remember our history lessons on how people jumped ships and sailed halfway round the world(even when they thought the world was flat!) to get some flavor in their food. So don't forget the salt, that can be used for way more, and those tasty spices. We have a long way to go but I feel good that in 1 week we have made some progress. What a fun website...very cool, Michelle!
Yes, I add my thanks to Michelle for the great site. It helps to have a support group right in our own homes.
